Report look and layout

When you create a report you can choose a report template to format the report data with.  Each template allows you to create another look for your report and another layout of the report data.  All templates are grouped into categories, subcategories and formats.  TimeTraces comes with a set of predefined report templates and categories installed.

Predefined main categories

The predefined main categories are:

Data All templates that generate data files that can be used to import into other applications.
Details All templates that generate reports containing detailed information.
Summary All templates that generate reports containing a short summary.

The "Data" and "Details" templates are further categorized into subcategories by the way the data is represented.  The "Summary" templates are only further categorized on format.

Predefined sub categories

The predefined sub categories are:

Time per activity A list of the total time worked on each activity.  The total time is also reported.
Time per time period A list of the total time worked on each time period.  The total time is also reported.
Time per activity / time period A table of the time worked on each activity for each time period (activities in the columns and time periods in the rows).  Both the rows and columns list the total time in them.

Within each subcategory one or more template formats are available.

Predefined formats

The predefined formats are:

Plain text A report formatted as a plain text file.  These files contain no formatting but they can be opened by virtually all word processors and text editors.
Text document A text document that uses the RTF (Rich Text format) format.  These files contain formatting and can be opened by most word processors (like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer).
Web page A report formatted as a web page (HTML file).  These files contain formatting.  They can be opened by most word processors (like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer), as well as placed on a web site.
CSV A data file in the CSV format (Comma Separated Value; columns separated by a comma).  They can be used by most spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice Calc.  The first row contains the column headers.
Tab-delimited A data file in the tab-delimited format (columns separated by a tab).  Their use and layout is identical to CSV data files, however CSV data files are more often recognized by spreadsheet applications.

General comments

Use the report format which is best suited for the application you will open the report in; consult the description of the templates and the intended application's manual for further details.

Note that you can also modify these predefined templates or create templates yourself.  More information on editing report templates can be found in the Report template specification reference.

TimeTraces is also able to create XML report files.  However, since each use of XML needs another XML file definition, it is not possible to include "standard" XML report templates with TimeTraces.  Consult the documentation of the application with which you want to use the XML files for the correct XML definition to use.  Then see the Report template specification reference to create the appropriate report template yourself.
